I CANNOT STOP LISTENING TO THIS ALBUM RIGHT NOW!

The album is Two Suns and it is going to be one of the best albums released this year. It is also the perfect example of an artist progressing – it is leaps and bounds better than her first (which I also love). She's becoming really adept at creating songs that are the perfect mix of indie perfection (think Thom Yorke or Bjork) with a pop aesthetic.

NEW BOOK FROM MICHAEL SIEBEN

Michael Sieben (a.k.a. One of my favourite artists ever) has a book of his works coming out through Upper Playground. I'm so keen to get my grimy little mitts on this thing because I KNOW that it's going to be fantastic!

Ask Michael Sieben to describe his work and he’ll tell you that he’s exploring themes focusing on the fading magic of childhood and its associated loss of innocence. His characters and creatures are unique in that they are both cute and grotesque; their purpose in life is to remind us that even though we have problems we still have reason to smile. According to his website, Michael spends his time designing skateboard graphics for Roger Skateboards, writing and illustrating articles for Thrasher Magazine, operating the Okay Mountain Gallery with his fellow mountaineers, working on various freelance projects with the Volcom Art Loft, painting and drawing for personal enjoyment, skateboarding and smiling.

I’m really happy with how the book turned out and I can’t thank Upper Playground and Gingko Press enough for giving me the opportunity to put together this cross section of my work. I hope it inspires other artists to persevere and follow their dreams. Because if a weird skate/art nerd in Texas can get a book published then I don’t see why anybody else couldn’t.

Tonight I watched Control – the bio-pic about Ian Curtis – for the first time and have developed a ridiculous crush on Sam Riley.

I don't know why, I can't explain it, I just have!

Anyway, so I hit up IMDB to find out more information and I stumbled across this.

It would appear that he is lined up to star in a film adaptation of Kerouac's On The Road. Being one of my favourite books of all time, I'm not quite sure how I feel about this, however it is something really interesting that I will be keeping an eye out for more information on.

I stumbled across this on BOOOOOOOM! a little while ago. It's a rad project and some of the photos are really, really spectacular.

There is just something really surreal and a little scary about them all, but I think that's why it attracts me so much.

"The abandoned houses project began innocently enough roughly ten years ago. I actually began photographing abandonment in Detroit in the mid 90’s as a creative outlet, and as a way of satisfying my curiosity with the state of my home town. I had always found it to be amazing, depressing, and perplexing that a once great city could find itself in such great distress, all the while surrounded by such affluence."

Like 2001: A Space Odyssey but for 2009. I don't knowwwwwwww ... I just want to see it so bad! AND IT'S SAM ROCKWELL!!!

Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems.

(Yes I have a slight obsession...)

Other tidbits in relation to the film: the robot is voiced by Kevin Spacey and the film is directed by Duncan Jones (which is was Zowie Bowie is going by nowadays... Yes he's the son of the great Mr David Bowie).

Released in US theatres June 12th, so I imagine an Australian release sometime around there ... i.e. SOOOOOOON!

OK ... So it's finally been announced! The date for the premiere of the two new Focalpoint DVDs. The Waiting List is the full length riding DVD of the crew doing their thing. I can tell you for a fact there is some serious shredding, a killer soundtrack and some awesome crashes! The second video is Defero which follows a more video magazine style – interviews and profiles of up-and-coming riders, some scene reports and a pretty hectic report from the infamous Bendigo Jam of '08!

If you're in Melbourne on this date you should really go down and check it out. That shit's going to be mental! And best of all, you're gonna get to see two really rad videos for just a gold coin donation (that they're asking for only to cover the cost of hiring the venue!)

I still really want a lightbox! I've come back from spending eight days in Melbourne and a fair chunk of that was spent doing handwritten titles for the upcoming Focalpoint DVD. "Last night Ear Candy caught wind of a strong rumor that Sunny Day Real Estate, one of the most influential and underappreciated post-grunge groups to come out of Seattle, has reunited with its original members and plan on touring this year.

The band got together in 1992 and released "Diary" in 1994, an album I discovered after Kurt Cobain killed himself and upon first listen I immediately fell in love with every song on the album. Unfortunately, after a few lineup changes and some reported struggles with its label, Sub Pop, the group disbanded in 2001. The original SDR lineup included Jeremy Enigk. Nate Mendel, William Goldsmith and Dan Hoerner and they are credited with being one of the grandfathers of emo. Now before you go blaming these guys for AFI, My Chemcial Romance and all those other emo bands, they aren't responsible for that type of emo. Think more along the lines of "Pinkerton" emo and you've got it.

If a few of those names in their lineup sound familiar it's because Mendel is the bass player in Foo Fighters and Goldsmith used to the drummer for the Foos before he left the group and some guy named Taylor Hawkins stepped in behind the kit. Oh yeah, and Enigk has had a pretty decent solo career too but not as noteworthy as the non-SDR days of Hawkins and Goldsmith.

There has been no official word on when the band will tour, but according to my source, current KEXP and former 107.7 The End jock Marco Collins, the original lineup is rehearsing and planning on touring."

OK so yesterday was Earth Day, but in honour of the day Disney has launched the trailer for their newest nature movie Oceans, due out in theaters exactly one year from today, on Earth Day 2010.

A fascinating journey into the depths of the ocean, amidst the tumult of the storms, in the vast territory of those who inhabit the sea. Part thriller, part meditation on the wonders of the sub-aquatic world.

The videography looks to be AMAZING and I can honestly say that I can't wait for it! Hahahaha ... It's the geek in me coming out!

Fun in Melbourne!

I was in Melbourne over New Years. Cooper and I visited Michaels (an epic camera store on Elizabeth St) so that he could buy a whole bunch of disposable cameras for a trip he was going on. I was inspired to get one of my own and in the last couple of days that I was there I took a whole bunch of photos. Some are pretty cool, some are just shit!

I put some of my favourites up on my Flickr, so scope them out if you like.

That sort of started my love affair with film – not for serious photography, but more for mucking around and having fun with it all! I have a few rolls from an action sampler, another disposable camera and from this old Praktica that my dad used to have. Can't wait to get all those rolls developed! Hahahaha

The Tweenbot is a cardboard-bodied, human-dependent robot that navigates the city with the help of pedestrians they encounter. Tweenbot has equipped with a flag stating its intended destination, and rely on people they meet to read this flag and to aim them in the right direction to reach their goal. Kacie Kinzer, the student of Tisch School of the Arts created the tweenbot for his art experiment.

Given their extreme vulnerability, the vastness of city space, the dangers posed by traffic, suspicion of terrorism, and the possibility that no one would be interested in helping a lost little robot...

The results were unexpected. Over the course of the following months, throughout numerous missions, the Tweenbots were successful in rolling from their start point to their far-away destination assisted only by strangers. Every time the robot got caught under a park bench, ground futilely against a curb, or became trapped in a pothole, some passerby would always rescue it and send it toward its goal. Never once was a Tweenbot lost or damaged. Often, people would ignore the instructions to aim the Tweenbot in the right direction , if that direction meant sending the robot into a perilous situation. One man turned the robot back in the direction from which it had just come, saying out loud to the Tweenbot, "You can;t go that way, it's toward the road."

"During one of the opening bands I saw a kid beat his own chest. It was during a lull in his mosh routine. And not done in like a "I'm feeling this beat" sort of way, or a single pound like us east coasters are prone to doing, but like, straight up ape. I couldn't even LOL, I was so depressed."

KINGDOM are a fairly awesome band from the US (on Eulogy) and I'm really enjoying their new album (The Rage That Guides) and their blog.

The blog is especially cool. They go into a fair amount of detail of what it's like to be on tour and some of the people they've met and shenanigans they get up to. I've spent the whole morning reading it instead of preparing for an interview I have to do tomorrow or applying for jobs, but hey, at least I'm entertained!

I haven't read Side A, it's predecessor, but I'm a fan of music and a fan of comics so it would only stand to reason that this collection would be EPIC!

Defgrip is a site that I check out almost daily anyway, but having been out all day today it wasn't until I got home briefly this afternoon that Cooper told me about this rad video that Harrison featured on the site.

It had him psyched on learning to do cool things with freehand based type, which is always really cool to see, especially since this is something that I have experimented with on and off since high school. I'm not great, but it is something that I enjoy so I do it.

Having watched it (and seeing Coop psyched on it) had me rummaging through the box under my bed of all my old supplies – calligraphy pens, black felt tips of varying thicknesses and (my favourite) brush markers! So tomorrow's plan is to get a pencil case to put all this stuff in, some ink cartridges for my calligraphy pen and compiling list of some other materials that I may have to go to Eckersley's to pick up.

"METALLICA played “Master Of Puppets” and “Enter Sandman” at last night’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony, with the band’s former bassist Jason Newsted and his replacement, Robert Trujillo, both taking part in the performance (the group played as a five-piece). They also led a “surprise jam” at the end of the night consisting of “Train Kept A Rollin’”, with RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS’ Flea, LED ZEPPELIN’s Jimmy Page, AEROSMITH’s Joe Perry and Jeff Beck (see video above).

METALLICA was inducted by RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS bassist Flea. With his hair dyed blue and wearing a vintage METALLICA T-shirt under a green blazer, Flea recalled the first time he heard METALLICA, in 1984 while on tour with the PEPPERS. It was 3 in the morning, they were tired, crammed into a van and sick of being on the road, and “this music comes on the radio, and I couldn’t believe that it fucking existed,” Flea said, according to MTV.com, as guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield jokingly covered his daughter’s ears. “It was like I had been living in this normal world, where I knew what everything was that came on the radio, and all of a sudden my mind was being blown by this beautiful, violent thing that was unlike anything I had ever heard before in my life.”

Flea profanely described staring at the radio in awe at this music that was explosive, precise, aggressive and intense, with wild and bizarre rhythm changes that he couldn’t describe. “I didn’t know what it was; the only thing I knew for sure was that it was a mighty thing,” he said of “Fight Fire with Fire”, likening METALLICA’s unique sound to a rarified “cosmic chemistry” and paying moving homage to the special gift of late bassist Cliff Burton, who died in 1986 in a bus accident while on tour with the group.

“When a person gets rocking to their music, everything else disappears, and that person is just one with the rock,” Flea said. “It is an inexplicable, awesome thing, and I bow down to it.”

Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich hugged onstage after giving speeches, and both thanked fans who have followed the band through its ups-and-downs that included the death of Cliff Burton.

“I think rock and roll is about possibilities and about dreams,” Ulrich said. “The fact that the six of us can be up on the stage tonight, snot-nosed kids, outcasts, loners who grew up in very different parts of the world, in very different situations and make it here tonight, to this wonderful night in front of all these people down here … Rock and roll truly is about possibilities. Look at us. METALLICA’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame! Can you fucking believe that?”

Hetfield started his thanks with a list of bands he’d like to see enter next, which included KISS, RUSH, THIN LIZZY, TED NUGENT, IRON MAIDEN and MOTÖRHEAD. He also dedicated the award to the young musicians trying to make it. “Dream big and dare to fail,” he said. “I dare you to do that. Because this is living proof that it is possible to make a dream come true.”

METALLICA flew in from Paris, where the group played Wednesday and Thursday nights. The band planned to rehearse with Newsted at soundcheck on Friday but the equipment and the crew apparently arrived later than expected, forcing the soundcheck to be rescheduled for Saturday."

THOM YORKE REMIXES DOOM

DOOM is one of my favourite hip hop artists right now (and has been for a while).

His new album, Born Like This, is on fairly high rotation at the moment (mostly late Thursday nights when I'm on the train home from work) so it's fair to say that I'm digging it a lot. I'm not in the mood for going into long descriptions about how amazing it is, so you'll just have to take my word for it (or scope out his MySpace) but one of the things that is really, really cool about this album is that one of the tracks on it has been remixed by the god that is at the top of my pantheon of music gods, Thom Yorke.

I'm not really sure how he would feel about being classified as a god, but hey, he can deal with it...

The Vine said this of the collaboration:

"US-based hip-hop producer Doom is a prolific and multifaceted man. Going under various other monikers (Viktor Vaughn, Zev Love X, King Geedorah, Metal Fingers, MF Doom and the Supervillain) and working on various collaborations (Madvillain and Danger Doom), he has been at the hip-hop game for some twenty years. But unlike most veterans in, say, rock, Doom has moved further and further into left-field as he ages. This year's Born Like This LP has already been claimed as another odd, slanted and engrossing transmission from whichever planet this dude currently resides. And along came Thom Yorke. He has taken "Gazillion Ear," one of the album's highlights, and let the colours run. Or, rather, bled the colours out of it. Doom's trademark fumbling flow remains fully in place, but Yorke has dropped the warm soul backing for a cloud of synths, rich in harmonics. It's a striking, if somewhat predictable, combination. The reduction of the soul drums to glitching beats loses some of the grit that complements Doom's reedy vocals. But, rather than merely distill, Yorke has also added - looming, dissonant vocal lines that give the track an apocalyptic air missing from the original. (Same old Yorke, summoning the apocalypse again!)"

Misery Signals

Misery Signals were in town a few weeks ago and put on what was probably the greatest live show I've seen this year so far.

Craig Nye took a bunch of awesome photos, and I've got a whole heap on a roll of film I'm waiting to get developed (and will post here very soon).

We got to hang with them before and after the show for a bit due to "mag business". They're just super awesome, super nice dudes! I like when that happens...

FAITH NO MORE REUNION

Former FAITH NO MORE singer Mike Patton’s publicist has confirmed that the hugely influential ’90s alt-metal band will reunite for a summer tour. At the moment, it appears that the group will only perform in Europe and there are absolutely no plans to tour the States.

The news was broken in the final line of a press release sent late Monday night (February 23) promoting Patton’s involvement in the “major motion film ‘Crank 2: High Voltage’, which listed Patton’s upcoming performance schedule, including a stop at the Coachella festival and “the highly anticipated reunion tour with FAITH NO MORE in Europe this summer.”

As previously reported, a source close to guitarist Jim Martin, who was in FAITH NO MORE from 1983 until 1993, has told BLABBERMOUTH.NET that the axeman expressed interest in taking part in the reunion after being recently contacted by keyboardist Roddy Bottum and a member of FAITH NO MORE’s management team, but that the band inexplicably decided to utilize a different guitarist — believed to be one of several musicians that were in FAITH NO MORE following Martin’s exit from the group — for the upcoming dates.

Although Kerrang! magazine reported in November that a number of U.K. concert venues had been placed on hold for FAITH NO MORE dates next spring, bassist Billy Gould downplayed the speculation, saying, “If anything like this were to happen, it would have to come from the band, and I haven’t spoken with any of them in over a year.”

Meanwhile, U.K. promoter Andy Copping also said FAITH NO MORE’s return this year was unlikely, telling Metal Hammer, “FAITH NO MORE haven’t managed to get that PR machine together … All of the band members haven’t agreed to do it.”

Martin left FAITH NO MORE in 1993 due to “internal conflicts” and was replaced by FNM singer Mike Patton’s MR. BUNGLE bandmate Trey Spruance. Trey also exited soon after recording 1995’s “King for a Day… Fool for a Lifetime”, just before the band was to begin a world tour. Spruance was replaced by Dean Menta, the band’s guitar roadie. FAITH NO MORE’s final studio CD, “Album of the Year”, was released in 1997 and featured yet another new guitarist, Jon Hudson, who was a former roommate of Billy Gould.
